Operating System – A
operating system provides an interface which user easily interacted computer
hardware.

An operating system manages all the basic tasks like fill
management, handling input and output, controlling, peripheral devices.

2. Functions of Operating System

There are various functions of operating system, these
are as follow:

1. Memory Management: –

Memory
Management mainly refers to the management of primary memory or Main memory.

Main memory is quickly accruable data shared by the CPU
and I/o devices. Operating system manages the allocation and deallocation of
memory as required. It also decides which process and data should move into and
out of the Memory.

It also keeps the track of
which part of memory are currently being use and by whom.

2. Process Management: –

A process is a program in execution state. Process
management refers to deciding the order in which processes can have the access
to the processor and for how much time. Operating system is responsible for the
following process management features-

i.) It schedules the processes and threads to the CPUs.

ii) I create and delete both user and system processes.

iii)  It suspends
and resumes the process.

iv)  Provides
synchronization between process.

3. File Management: –

file Management is one of the most visible component of
an operating system refers to the management of file related activities such as
organization of storage, its creation, deletion, modification, renaming,
sharing, etc.

An operating system creates and deletes files and
directories to organize files. It supports primitives for manipulating files
and directories. It is also used for backing up files on stable (non-volatile)
storage media.

4. Device Management: –

An
Operating system communicates with devices via their respective drivers. It
keeps the devices connected to computer system

It also manages which process gets access to a certain
device and for how much time. It also performs the task of allocation of
devices to the processes in an efficient and effective manner and further
deallocate when they are no longer required.

5. Security: –

 Security means
protecting the data and information of a computer system from being infected
and accessed in an unauthorized manner. 
An operating system protect the Computer system by means of password and
other techniques, which prevents unauthorized access to the system data. A operating system provides an interface which user easily interacted
computer hardware.
